How ironic that the first F1 race you saw was the 1984 Monaco Grand Prix, I race I consider one of the most important in F1 history. Let me count the ways:
1. The "arrival" of Senna on the big stage along with Stefan Bellof.
2. Round 1 of the never ending prize fight between Senna and Prost.
3. The half points awarded costing Prost the title at the end of the season by half a point.
4. Senna (1994), Bellof (1985), Winklehock (1985), Alboretto (2001), Elio DeAngelis (1986), all guys we lost all too sadly and early.
1984 was the first year of formula one I was able to follow completely. I had seen a few races sporatically here in America but that was the first year they were all available to me. I was the same age as you, 13. In junior high school we had a book fair and much to my surprise they had 3 formula one posters. I bought all three. All three of them were pictures taken in Monaco in 84. One was Nelson Piquet (my favorite driver) in his brabham. Another one was Senna in his Toleman. The best one BY FAR and the center piece of my room was De Angelis in his JPS reflecting on the wet asphalt. That was possibly the best looking race car EVER! To this day I HATE Paul Ricard circuit, even the mention of it. |

| Very informative and interesting site, you obviously enjoy F1 nostalgia and it is nice to see a website devoted to a less well known but very talented driver. RIP Elio. |

25 years today since Elio's needless death. He was the driver I supported as a young lad and I have never forgotten him. I have a great painting on my wall of Elio beating Rosberg to the win at Austria 1982 and it's the first thing I see when I get out of bed!
Since 1986 I have supported Jean Alesi and now Jaime Alguersuari who reminds me of Elio De Angelis. His driving style and the way he expresses himself seem to be just how I remember Elio. To me watching Alguersuari takes me back to 84/85!! Cheers Elio. |

Hi there, reading the first few lines on the homepage, I could easily have written that myself! I started watching F1 around 1984/85, and I too was entranced with the slick black and gold JPS Lotus, and Elio was my favourite, by some distance. I guess watching it mainly on my B&W telly in my room, the dark lotus stood out more than any of the other cars, which were all just shades of grey!
It's a pity there wasn't the coverage then as there is now on the BBC, I had to make do with the highlights programs on Sunday evenings.
This coming Sunday is the 15th of May 2011, and it will be exactly 25 years since Elio's tragic death. |

| Elio De Angelis brought charisma, style, and the ability to win, and other drivers new that... many occasions while on the track, when they were told Elio was coming up behind them - either surrender and let Elio pass, or he will pass you anyway 'you dont have a choice'. To all the fans of Formula 1 in 1986 at the Paul Ricard circuit, when that crash happened - time stopped for a moment and the world lost a true master, and a real gentleman. I only carried on watching Formula 1 for his former team mate Ayrton Senna, however when Senna lost his life at the San Morino circuit in 1994, time stopped again and I never watched Formula 1 for maybe 10 years after. Let us never forget either of these wonderful drivers and always remember them as being the very best of the best. |

| I remember watching and enjoying Motor racing as a teenager in the days of James Hunt and Elio etc. those were the days!. Pity racing was not as safe as it is today,My thoughts are with all those who have died, what unnecessary deaths. |

| Thank you for this tribute to a very underated driver and over all "good bloke". It is an excellent tribute to one who deserves to be remembered as a driver and a person. |
